DIY design style water bowl

the perfect bucket-shaped water bowl for Lucky.

After my trip to IKEA yesterday, I found the right candidate: the SMARTA bowl.
...and of course I couldn't leave it plain.
I wanted to give her a design style, cool looking water bowl.

My rule of the thumb:
you want to give a "design flavor" to anything:
go Typography and Helvetica!
So I decided to make the water bowl with the chemistry H2O symbol.

making your own stencil

Here is my template for the stencil that I made:
I used Helvetica Bold - size 230 for the letters
and Helvetica bold - size 130 for the number

I printed out the template and taped it to my glass table,
then I taped on top a piece of Clear Contact Paper,
and used my desk light under the table to create "my DIY light-box".
Using: patience, a ruler and my X-ACTO Knife, I cut out the letters and number.

Because the bowl is not cylindrical, I had to cut the stencil in three parts to be able to apply the letters straight without the contact paper creasing and creating a mess.
Make sure you press the contact paper very well on the edges of the stencil, and then start applying the Pebeo Porcelaine 150 tapping on the stencil with a sponge, until you reached the perfect coverage.
Caution removing the stencil, and clean eventual smudges with a q-tip.
Bake in the oven for 35 minutes at 150C or 300F, let it cool down, wash and rinse and be surprised that your dog has an A+ in chemistry!!

  2. Love the idea of simple "statements" on bowls, perhaps even mugs!
